What Do FIRST And LEGO do?
FIRST and LEGO partner to create both the FLL program and the annual Challenge as well as to manage the FLL Operational Partners around the world.
FLL’s goals are to:
- Create a strong, quality, sustainable program that encourages young people to learn about careers in science, math, technology and engineering
The creation of the annual Challenge includes:
- Identification of an internationally relevant scientific issue
- Bringing together a team of subject experts to identify important scientific background on the topic; explore possible missions and recommend project topics, useful resources and organizations involved in the year’s theme
- Refining missions, designing mission models, the game mat and project resource material and the project assignment for FLL
- Testing the game in FIRST Place
- Developing logos, posters and artwork for the annual FLL Challenge
- Providing Tech and Challenge Support
- Staffing the program to support the activities above
Additional worldwide program development includes:
- Developing international standards for the FLL program, including events
- Developing content for the Coaches’ Handbook
- Developing judging standards and associated materials
- Developing referee standards and associated materials
- Developing scoring and ranking spreadsheets, software and associated support
- Developing marketing and recruitment documents and brochures
- Planning and executing the FLL World Festival event
- Creating and maintaining the worldwide FLL website
- Creating and maintaining the FLL International Team Forum
- Developing worldwide FLL sponsorships
- Developing support systems for FLL Partners including this manual and the PCT
- Communicating with FLL Partners through email blasts, conference calls
- Executing FLL Program evaluations and impact studies
- Developing and supporting a network of Partners that manage the program in a designated region
- Program staffing to support the activities above
